The man who pioneered the idea believes it is little more than marketing spin now.
Bill Gross first attacked fund managers for misusing ‘total return’ as an investment idea, and now he has proclaimed the entire approach extinct.
In his latest market outlook, neatly called ‘They just wanna sell you a bond fund’, Gross said Pimco helped propagate the idea in the 1980s at a time when it felt like the bond bull market was at its absolute height.
